The Rhine Railway (German: Rheinbahn) in the German state of Baden is a railway line from Mannheim to Karlsruhe. It is part of the Mannheim–Karlsruhe–Basel railway. It was opened in 1870 as a shorter alternative to the old Rhine Valley line via Heidelberg. Originally it ran from Graben-Neudorf to Karlsruhe via a more westerly route than the current route, which was later called the Hardt Railway. In 1895 the current route was opened to Karlsruhe and extended to Rastatt and Haguenau. The section over the border at the Rhine was closed in 1966.

Route

The line runs entirely within the Upper Rhine flood plain and is therefore almost straight and has no major structures. From Karlsruhe Hauptbahnhof to Hagsfeld it runs within the Free City of Karlsruhe; from Blankenloch to Waghäusel it crosses Karlsruhe district and from Neulußheim to the disused halt of Hirschacker it runs through Rhein-Neckar district. The rest of the line passes through the city of Mannheim. With Karlsruhe, Stutensee, Graben-Neudorf, Waghäusel, Neulußheim, Hockenheim, Oftersheim, Schwetzingen and Mannheim it passes through a total of eight cities and towns.
